Announcing ‘Multi-Age Grouping’ at St. Joan of Arc!!

Multi-age classrooms offer differentiation at its best!

So what is ‘differentiated instruction”, anyway?! Well, let’s see…

Differentiated classrooms feel right to students who learn in different ways and at different rates and who bring to school different talents and interests.  Teachers in differentiated classrooms are in touch with their students and approach teaching more as a small group exercise with attention directed at each child’s interests and abilities.

Differentiated classrooms actively attend to both student similarities and student differences.

Multi-age grouping offers 21st century learning initiatives…with differentiation as a key element. There is no single formula for creating a differentiated classroom. What follows are some key ideas about differentiation…

  • The teacher focuses on the essentials…to recall, understand, and be able to do.
  • The teacher attends to student differences…to address common needs.
  • Assessment and Instruction are inseparable… ongoing, authentic, and diagnostic.
  • The teacher modifies content, process, and products… students learn with activities and vehicles that are designed to ensure success and demonstrate knowledge.
  • All students participate in respectful work…learning options are a good fit for each student while commonalities and differences are honored.
  • The teacher and the student collaborate in learning…teachers are architects but students assist with the design and building!
  • The teacher balances group and individual norms…both student and parents are aware of individual goals and growth relative to his/her standing in the class.
  • The teacher and students work together flexibly…sometimes the entire class works together, and sometimes, small groups are more effective.

We anticipate a school year that will be engaging and one that will provide opportunities for children to explore relevant and meaningful curriculum.

Multi-age grouping will assist the teachers in recognizing the importance of developing positive peer relationships and will provide support for collaborative small group projects that not only develop cognitive ability but promote peer interactions, as well.

St. Joan of Arc Parish School Earns Exemplary Recognition

On November 19, 2008, a team of educators visited St. Joan of Arc Parish School as representatives of Wisconsin Religious and Independent Schools Accreditation (WRISA) and as representatives of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.

The team found that the school is in full compliance with the WRISA Standards and Quality Indicators. The team examined every aspect of the school’s educational program and recommended full accreditation to the WRISA Executive Director and the Archdiocese of Milwaukee Accreditation Review Board.

The school applied for Exemplary Recognition, as well as full accreditation, in the area of Mission, Community, and Climate. It was evident to the team that the mission of the school is carried out each day and is a testament to the continued commitment to the ideals of Catholic education. Therefore, it was recommended that St. Joan of Arc Parish School is the recipient of the Exemplary Recognition Award.
